The founders of team handball in the USA will be honored on June 5, 2021, at the Swim and Sport Club in Flanders, New Jersey, at Handball Heroes II, an annual tribute dinner commemorating the people who have made the sport possible in this country, and now you don’t have to be there to be part of this historic event.  American Handball Associates, the producers of HHII, have teamed up with Stream.Byte TV to arrange for living streaming of the event, the destination for which has now been finalized.  You can watch Handball Heroes II, and make a PayPal donation to its fund-raising benefactor, the U.S. Team Handball Foundation, by going to aha.games, the newly published website of AHA.

The event is being tailored to a live streaming audience and there will be special call-ins from American handball notables from across the country.  HH II follows up on Handball Heroes I, their successful tribute to Mike Cavanaugh, retiring CEO of USA Team Handball at the time, in January of 2020, with a second rendition that this time gets back to the roots of the sport in America.  AHA will be giving out the Founders Awards to three people who brought the game to the USA, Dr. Peter Buehning, his wife, Renate Buehning, and Laszlo Jurak, who will be celebrating his 90th birthday, and will be, as well, giving the Cavy Award to Jan O’Shea for her years of service to the sport.

Live Streaming begins at 8:30 pm, EST, Saturday, June 5.

Press release from American Handball Associates:

The founders of team handball in the USA will be honored on June 5, 2021, at the Swim and Sport Club in Flanders, New Jersey, at Handball Heroes II, an annual tribute dinner commemorating the people who have made the sport possible in this country. Presented by American Handball Associates, HH II follows up on Handball Heroes I, their successful tribute to Mike Cavanaugh, retiring CEO of USA Team Handball at the time, in January of 2020, with a second rendition that this time gets back to the roots of the sport in America.

AHA will be giving out the Founders Awards to three people who brought the game to the USA, Dr. Peter Buehning, his wife, Renate Buehning, and Laszlo Jurak, who will be celebrating his 90th birthday. The Buehnings, both of whom passed away in the 2000s, will be represented by sons and Olympians, Peter Jr. and Jim, his other son, former professional tennis player, Fritz Buehning, daughter, Susan, and members of their families.

Generations of former players dating back to the sixties, Olympians and club players alike, have already committed to the event, to show their love and appreciation to the people who so profoundly touched their lives through the sport of team handball. The event begins outdoors in the club’s bier garten with a Gold Medal Mixer from 6:00 to 7:30 pm, followed by dinner and an Awards show indoors at the SSC clubhouse that concludes around 10:00.

The awards show will be live streamed and will feature video introductions for each of the Founders Award honorees, along with 2021 Cavy Award for development of the sport in the USA, which this year goes to Jan O’Shea. There will be, as well, special guest introductions in addition to call-in appearances and other surprises. Event producers will require proof of vaccination or a negative test within 48 hours for entry which, along with generally encouraging Covid trends, should make for a relaxing, maskless indoor evening of around 75 people.

American Handball Associates has been created to raise the public’s consciousness about the sport of team handball and to create events that honor the game and its legacy. We are all former or current players whose passion for the game takes many forms, often in efforts to publicize and sustain its history in this country.
