Colorado Springs, CO — USA Team Handball today announces that Robert Hedin has formally stepped down as Head Coach of the U.S. Men’s National Team. Hedin has served in the role since 2018.

During his seven-year tenure, Hedin brought valuable leadership and international experience to the American program. Under his guidance, the U.S. Men’s National Team qualified for the 2023 IHF World Championship and accepted a wild card invitation to compete in the 2025 edition, earning five total victories across both tournaments. The team also qualified for the Pan American Games in 2019 and 2023, finishing in 6th and 4th place, respectively.

“We thank Robert for his years of service to the U.S. Men’s National Team,” said Michael King, CEO of USA Team Handball. “He took on the role during a period of significant rebuilding and worked hard to bring stability and results, even as that process continued. We are grateful for his contributions and wish him the very best in the next chapter of his career.”

While discussions had been underway to expand coaching support across national teams, a sustainable increase in compensation for the men’s program was not feasible in the immediate term. USA Team Handball is currently conducting a comprehensive review of its national team leadership structure in collaboration with the International Handball Federation (IHF), and will announce next steps in due course.

“Robert played an important role in reestablishing the U.S. on the international handball stage,” King added. “As we prepare for the LA 2028 Olympic Games, we remain focused on building the infrastructure and competitive depth needed for long-term success—across both the men’s and women’s programs.”

USA Team Handball will release details on its coaching search process in the coming weeks, with the goal of identifying a qualified candidate to lead and add to a strong and committed pool of Men’s National Team athletes into the next chapter of competitive success.
