United States Men Qualify for 2027 IHF Men’s World Championship, Capture Gold on Home Soil at 2026 NACHC Championship
The United States Men’s National Team is headed back to the sport’s biggest stage.
Behind a dominant run on home soil, the United States secured qualification for the 2027 IHF Men’s World Championship in Germany, capturing gold at the 2026 North America & Caribbean Handball Confederation (NACHC) Men’s Continental Championship, hosted in conjunction with the 2026 USA Team Handball Open Championships.
The path to gold began on a tighter note than the final margins that would follow.
Opening play on Tuesday, May 12, the United States earned a hard-fought 32–27 victory over Mexico, overcoming a physical challenge to begin tournament play with an important opening win.
From there, the Americans steadily found another gear.
On Wednesday, Team USA turned in a convincing performance against regional rival Greenland, earning a 35–25 victory that demonstrated both defensive discipline and offensive depth.
By Thursday, the United States delivered a complete performance with its spot in the final all-but assured before throw-off, defeating Canada 34–17 in commanding fashion to make certain a place in the Continental Final and, with it, a direct qualification opportunity to the 2027 IHF Men’s World Championship.
Facing Greenland once again in the final, the United States produced an emphatic statement performance, defeating the perennial regional power 32–18 in front of a sold-out crowd, securing the 2026 NACHC Men’s Championship title in dominant fashion.
The victory marked not only continental supremacy, but a symbolic step forward for a national team preparing for the dual challenge of competing on the world stage in 2027 while continuing its build toward the Los Angeles 2028 Summer Olympic Games.
The tournament itself unfolded against the backdrop of a landmark week for the sport domestically.
Hosted concurrently with the 2026 USA Team Handball Open Championships, the event brought together elite club competition, national team play, technical education initiatives, youth development programming, and international matches--the first time the Men's program had played host for the Continental Championships since its predecessor Pan American Championships in 1996 in Colorado Springs.
Attention now turns to the global stage.
The United States will learn which of the eight 4-team groups in will enter as a Pot 3 Team during the June 10 draw for the 2027 IHF Men's World Championships.
The event will provide the United States another opportunity to test itself against the sport’s traditional global powers as the program continues its rapid upward trajectory toward LA28, following its 26th place finish in the 2025 Edition of the World Championships.
For a team that began the week with pressure on home soil and a reformed coaching staff leading its first official international matches, it ended with something far more enduring: continental gold, qualification secured, and the opportunity to once again represent the United States at the highest level of international handball.
