U16 Women Take NACHC Silver; To Cap Historic Two-Year Cycle for USATH at Inaugural IHF Worlds

MEXICO CITY, Mexico — The USA Team Handball U16 Women’s National Team has qualified for the inaugural IHF Women’s U16 World Championship, earning silver at the North American and Caribbean qualification event in Mexico City and securing its place at the historic first edition of the championship this fall in Agadir, Morocco.

The result is significant on its own. For the first time, the United States will send a women’s cadet-age team to an IHF World Championship, expanding the country’s international pathway at the youngest age-group level and giving a new generation of American women a direct entry point into world-level handball.

But the silver medal in Mexico City also represents something larger: the turning chapter of an unprecedented two-year qualification cycle for USA Team Handball.

Across the most recent international cycle, the United States qualified nine of 11 eligible national team programs for World Championships, spanning indoor, beach, wheelchair, men’s, women’s, senior, junior, youth, and cadet competition.

In addition, the Men’s Junior and Women’s Junior National Teams qualified for the Junior Pan American Games for the first time, where the Men's team took Bronze.

The achievement reflects a dramatic expansion in both competitive reach and program depth. Over less than the last two years, USA Team Handball programs have combined to win 19 medals in international competition. Perhaps the more remarkable accomplishment across programs, every single national team program earned at least one medal in the cycle, including several programs that captured their first medal ever.

That is a significant departure from the previous biennial period, when only five programs earned medals, with one medal each.

“This is the kind of success you hope for, plan for, and work toward every day,” said USA Team Handball Chief Executive Officer Michael King. “Of course, when it starts arriving across nearly every program all at once, it does not simply validate the plan — it accelerates every demand for organizational maturity at the same time. Nine World Championship qualifications, first-time pathways, and medals across every program place a very real amount of pressure on a still-growing federation. But going from one, to expecting to compete in five World Championships per year is exactly the kind of pressure we want. It reflects an extraordinary amount of work from our NT staff, coaches, volunteers, and athletes, who are carrying the heavy lift and elevating each program and US Handball at a pace and to a level that has not been, and would not be possible without their commitment, resilience, and belief.”

Because IHF World Championships across all disciplines and age levels are held biennially, with men’s and women’s pathways typically alternating by year, progress is best measured across a full two-year cycle. By a clear and measurable margin, the United States has just completed the most successful competitive period in its modern history.

For USA Team Handball, that cycle will now close in Morocco, where the U16 Women will compete in the first-ever IHF Women’s U16 World Championship from October 15-24.

The U16 Women’s silver in Mexico City also reinforces a broader shift in the national team pipeline. In recent cycles, USA Team Handball has placed greater emphasis on building complete age-group pathways, creating more competitive opportunities before senior national team selection, and ensuring that athletes can enter the international system earlier and stay connected through junior, youth, and senior programming.

The result is a national team structure with more teams competing, more athletes gaining international experience, and more programs producing results at the continental level.

That growth has extended beyond the athletes on the court. More than 30 staff members made their national team debuts across the 11 programs during this cycle, expanding the coaching, team leadership, medical, operational, and administrative support needed to sustain a broader international footprint.

And as one cycle closes, the next is already underway.

The standard is no longer simply participation. Expectations have moved with the results. The Men’s U19 National Team has already launched selection for the 2026 IHF Trophy this October, where the United States will look to defend the gold medal it won in 2024. The Wheelchair National Team will soon travel to Spain, where it will defend its World Championship silver medal.

For USA Team Handball, the last two years changed the baseline. The next cycle begins with more teams, more pathways, more pressure, and a clearer understanding of what American handball is now capable of becoming.
