U.S. PARALYMPICS: Records Continue to Fall at U.S. Paralympics Open Swimming Championships

MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA (December 8, 2005) – U.S. Paralympics Elite Team member Jessica Long (Baltimore, Md. / Merritt Towson Manta Rays) improved upon her own World Record set in the preliminaries this morning in the S8 Women’s 100 meter Butterfly, finishing in 1:17.77. Her 50-meter split in the event (35.89) was also a new American mark.

The second World mark of the evening was set by U.S. Paralympics National Team member Roy Perkins (Del Mar, Calif. / Peninsula Aquatics) in the Men’s S5 100 fly (1:27.11), who also bettered his own standard set in the morning preliminaries.

Other notable swims of the evening included new PanAmerican Records from Perkins and teammate Lantz Lamback (Augusta, Ga. / Aiken-Augusta Swim League) in the Men’s S5 and S7 200 Freestyle events respectively; a new American and PanAmerican Record by Anna Eames (Woodbury, Minn. / Twin Cities Swim Team) in the Women’s S10 100 meter Butterfly; and new American and PanAmerican Records by Justin Fleming (Redmond Wa. / Tucson Ford Aquatics) in the Men’s S8 100 meter Butterfly event.

A total of 12 American, 12 PanAmerican, 1 European, and 2 World Records were broken during the evening’s finals.

The competition continues through December 10th, with preliminaries beginning each morning at 10:00 a.m. and finals each evening at 7:00 p.m.
