Despite coming from a family of very accomplished volleyball players, Clay didn’t pick up the sport until he was 17. "My dad tried to get me to play when I was younger but I wasn't having it because I didn't want it…I was skateboarding, surfing and getting into trouble," said Clay. "He tried to teach me but I never listened. I was over it." But when he did catch the bug at the Junior Olympics, he improved rapidly. By the time he was 21, he represented the U.S. in the World University Games. At 22, he left the University of Hawaii after three seasons to play professionally in a Puerto Rican league, with the goal of improving enough to make the 2004 Olympic team. Mission accomplished.
Prophetically, in 1999 Clay told the Honolulu Star-Bulletin: "Three years from now I see my future in volleyball. It's probably the one thing I can be successful in. I've just got to concentrate and not be the lazy kid that I am."
