After one year of volleyball in high school, Barnett left the Midwest for the California beach volleyball scene. He later played indoors for Los Angeles Pierce Community College and caught the attention of perennial powerhouse Pepperdine University. There, he was a two-time All-American, which led to the National Team in 1997, which led to the 2000 Olympic team and the 2004 team.
