Suxho grew up in communist Albania where he and his family “had a really nice life,” making their own food and clothing surrounded by beautiful land, friendly people and very little crime, he told Volleyball magazine. “Growing up I was completely sealed from the rest of the world. We had no idea how the other world lived, how they worked or what they were like.” In February 1996, the family left Albania and moved to Boston, Mass. “My (paternal) grandmother was American and her whole family, whom she hadn’t seen in 40 years (due to communism), lived in Philadelphia and Boston. In 1991 she reunited with her family and then brought us over,” explained Suxho. “My dad thought it would be better for us. He was thinking about us and giving us a better opportunity in the sport. Obviously, America is one of the best volleyball countries in the world and everybody knows that, so he thought I could have a chance at a better life.”
On Arnold Schwarzenegger’s campaign for governor of California: “All my friends in college used to mimic my accent and make me say the phrase ‘I’ll be back.’ And, although I am not really the best person to get political advice from, I will probably vote for Arnold. His accent corresponds with mine.”
