Although Wells was a successful junior sailor, he secretly longed to be a windsurfer. “I saw Robby Naish on magazine covers when I was 11 or 12 and I knew then deep inside my head that's what I wanted to do, even though I didn't tell anyone. To me he was Michael Jordan. At the same time, my older brother was a windsurfer and went out every day in the summer. I was too small to even uphaul the sail back then. At the time I was doing really well in junior sailing, but the seed was planted and although I didn't buy my first windsurfer for another 7 or 8 years, I was planning in the back of my head the whole time that I would be a windsurfer someday.”

“It's very common to have high-speed collisions, get knocked off your board,” Wells told USATODAY.com. “People go flying, people go through each other's sails, people get knocked in the head with other people's booms and rigs. There are a lot of collisions when it's windy. It's actually pretty exciting to watch.”
