Scoring Tips on a 2-on-1:

They don't come along every day, or in every game, but a 2-on-1 situation may be your best chance to score. The important thing is to be patient and stay in control. You don't want to let the defenseman dictate what happens in this situation. You have the advantage. Make sure you come away with a good shot on net.

Tip #1 - You're in control when you're the person with the puck on a 2-on-1. You have the option to shoot, pass or take the puck to the net. Try to focus on what the defenseman is giving you and what options are available. If they're covering you, the best thing to do is to pass it over to your teammate. If they seem to be cheating toward your teammate, then you should shoot or take the puck to the net.

Tip #2 - The defenseman is taught to stay between you and your teammate and take away the passing lane with his or her stick. He or she also wants to force the puck carrier to the outside. Don't make their job easy and carry the puck to the outside because once you're there you have no angle to shoot. They know you have to pass.

Tip #3 - A lot of youth players, when they have a 2-on-1 skate stride for stride in on the defenseman. It's easy for a defenseman to cover if the two of you are right on the same plain. The player without the puck now has two options. He or she can break hard for the net and receive a pass or look for a rebound, or he or she can stagger their stride and create a passing lane over the puck carrier's shoulder, depending on which side it's on. The player with the puck now either passes or shoots depending on the best scoring opportunity available.

Tip #4 - I'm the type of player who likes to go to the net when I don't have the puck. If I see my teammate shooting then I try to get in there as fast as I can and go for the rebound. One of my favorite plays is to cut to the far post and have the person with the puck fake a shot and pass it across the slot where I can tip it in.

Last Thing To Remember: A lot of people on a 2-on-1 automatically think they have to pass it because someone's with them. Wherever you are, you have to look at your best options. If your teammate is wide open and they have a better shot then you should pass it. But don't be afraid to shoot it because you always have your teammate there for a rebound.
