USA advances to synchronized trampoline finals at 2007 World Trampoline and Tumbling Championships

QUEBEC CITY, Quebec, Canada, Nov. 2, 2007—Chris Estrada of Lafayette, La., and Ryan Weston of Chubbuck, Idaho, advanced to the men’s synchronized trampoline finals at the 2007 World Trampoline and Tumbling Championships in Quebec City, Que. Team finals for double mini-trampoline and tumbling are today at 6 p.m. Individual event finals are tomorrow at 1 p.m.

The USA will compete in the team finals for men’s and women’s double-mini trampoline and tumbling. The USA qualified for individual event finals for men’s and women’s synchronized trampoline, tumbling, double mini and trampoline.

Estrada and Weston earned the second-highest score of the men’s compulsory routines with a 39.90, tying with the Japanese team of Tetsuya Sotomura and Yasuhiro Ueyama. The U.S. pair then posted a 48.70 on its optional routine for a total score of 88.60 and a sixth-place finish after the limit of one synchronized trampoline team per country in the finals.

“We did pretty well in synchronized trampoline today,” said Estrada. “We had a very good compulsory routine and our optional wasn’t too bad, either. We’re going to get a good night’s rest and see if we can move up a few spots in the finals tomorrow.”

The duo of Logan Dooley of Lake Forest, Calif., and Steven Gluckstein of Atlantic Highlands, N.J., and the pair of Brittany Dircks of Orland Park, Ill., and Alaina Williams of Amarillo, Texas, competed in men’s and women’s synchronized trampoline, respectively, but did not advance to finals.

Eight teams qualify for the synchronized trampoline finals. International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) rules state that no more than one team per country can advance to the final round.

The 2007 World Trampoline and Tumbling Championships is the qualifying event for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China, and the 2009 World Games in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Based on the results, 15 men and 15 women in trampoline earned berths for their countries for the Olympic Games. Brittany Dircks of Orland Park, Ill., finished 15th and secured one of two wild card Olympic spots for the United States, the country's third straight appearance in women's trampoline. In men’s trampoline, the USA just missed qualifying for the Olympic Games with Chris Estrada of Lafayette, La., placing 16th after adjusting for the maximum athlete per country restriction.

The 2009 World Games, a multi-sport event for non-Olympic disciplines, will feature competition in tumbling, double mini-trampoline and synchronized trampoline. Each qualifying country is allowed one man and one woman in both tumbling and double mini, and one men’s pair and one women’s pair in synchronized trampoline.
