By Jamie Fabos // August 16, 2007
BANGKOK - Christina Loukas (Riverwoods, Ill. / Indiana) will compete for a medal in the women’s 3m springboard finals at the World University Games, after finishing sixth in tonight’s semifinal. Loukas scored 313.80 points in the contest, which was interrupted by a brief power outage. Fellow U.S. semifinalist and a bronze medalist at these Games, Mary Yarrison (Springfield, Va. / Texas) finished 14th, and is a reserve for Saturday’s finals competition.
Loukas strung together a consistent program in the semifinal, posting a low score of 55.80 and a high of 67.50. She earned the high score on her final dive of the night, a forward 2 ½ somersault, 1 twist pike that bumped her from seventh to sixth place in the last round.
A trio of Olympians claimed the top three spots in the semifinal. China’sTing Li (359.45) was first, followed by Mexico’s Paola Milagros Espinosa (341.70) and Laura Sanchez (339.70).
Sarah Chrzanowski (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Eastern Michigan) ranked 23rd with a score of 235.20 in the preliminaries earlier today and did not advance.
