Dumais, Colwill Win Silver, Bronze on 3-meter at Italian Grand Prix

ROME – United States divers continued their Grand Prix success by winning a pair of medals in the men’s 3-meter contest at the Italian Grand Prix on Friday.

Troy Dumais (Ventura, Calif.) won the silver with 497.55 points, and Chris Colwill (Brandon, Fla.) scored 470.10 points to take the bronze. China’s Luo Yutong, the 2007 world champion on 1-meter, scored 516.40 points for gold.

Dumais was in medal contention the entire competition, having never dropped lower than third place.

Colwill, however, needed a strong final dive to have a chance at a medal. With one round remaining, he was in fourth place and nearly 20 points behind Canada’s Alexandre Despatie, who won the silver on 3-meter at the 2007 World Championships. Colwill was nearly perfect on his last dive, a reverse three-and-one-half somersault tuck that earned 9.0s from six of the seven judges. It was enough to overtake Despatie, who fell to fourth place and finished 0.65 points behind Colwill in the final standings.

Dumais and Colwill have each won three Grand Prix medals in individual 3-meter competitions this year. Dumais won the gold at the AT&T USA Diving Grand Prix and claimed a bronze at last week’s Comunidad de Madrid. Colwill also won bronze medals at the Canada Cup and AT&T USA Diving Grand Prix. He was fourth in Spain last week.

In other action Friday, Cassandra Cardinell (Loudonville, N.Y) advanced to the women’s 10-meter finals for third consecutive time in 2007 Grand Prix action. She scored 315.60 points to place sixth. A pair of Chinese divers, Cao Jingzhen (357.65) and Chen Ni (356.40) battled it out for the top two spots, and Australia’s Alexandra Croak (347.05) won the bronze. USA’s Haley Ishimatsu (Seal Beach, Calif.) advanced to the semifinals and ended up eighth overall with 265.75 points.

The Italian Grand Prix continues through Sunday, June 17. Saturday’s competition features women’s 3-meter and men’s 10-meter events. All synchronized diving events will be contested Sunday.
