Finals Set at the 2008 Team Trials

Finals are now set following Wednesday’s racing at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Rowing on Lake Mercer in West Windsor, N.J. Referred to as the non-qualified small boat trials, the regatta features racing in the men’s single sculls, lightweight women’s double sculls and lightweight men’s double sculls.

In the lightweight men’s double sculls, the California Rowing Club/Potomac Boat Club duo of Michael Aller (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Gavin Frase (Orinda, Calif.) recorded the fastest time of the semifinals. Racing in the first of two semis, Aller and Frase clocked a 6:29.24 to finish just under three seconds ahead of the Malta Boat Club/Penn AC combination of Bjorn Larsen (Lake Stevens, Wash.) and Richard Montgomery (Batavia, Ill.). With the top two finishers from each semifinal advancing to tomorrow’s first final, Larsen and Montgomery defeated Bantam Boat Club’s Ben Hutz (Pittsburg, Pa.) and Brian Tryon (Indianapolis, Ind.) by 2.42 seconds to also advance. In the second semifinal, the USRowing Training Center/Bachelor’s Barge Club tandem of Dan Urevick-Ackelsberg (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Cody Lowry (Bristow, Okla.) won a three-boat sprint to the finish. The duo crossed the line with a time of 6:31.75. USRowing Training Center’s Andy Quinn and Shane Madden (Ambler, Pa.) held off GMS Rowing Center’s Brian De Regt (Rowayton, Conn.) and Jonathan Winter (New Haven, Conn.) to finish second. Quinn and Madden finished in a 6:33.20, with De Regt and Winter coming home in a 6:33.75.

California Rowing Club’s Patrick O’Hea (Culver City, Calif.) won the repechage, or second-chance race, in the men’s single sculls by clocking a 7:09.90. O’Hea finished a little more than one second ahead of Bantam Boat Club’s Peter Graves (Cincinnati, Ohio), who finished with a time of 7:11.25. Penn AC’s Stephen Whelpley (Moquon, Wis.) finished third, followed by Atlanta Rowing Club’s Jordan Smith (Forestville, Calif.). O’Hea and Graves will join heat winners Ken Jurkowski (New Fairfield, Conn.) and James Dietz (Amherst, Mass.) in the first final.

With only one crew advancing from each repechage in the lightweight women’s double sculls, Vesper Boat Club’s Rebecca Smith (Torrington, Conn.) and Hannah Moore (Niskayuna, N.Y.) clocked a 7:17.47 to defeat Pocock Rowing Center’s Michelle Trannel (East Dubuque, Ill.) and Liz Patterson (Davis, Calif.) by 2.58 seconds in the first race. Smith and Moore took control of the race as the crews entered the second 1,000 meters. In the second repechage, Vesper’s Carey Brezler (Waynesboro, Pa.) and Wendy Tripician (Needham, Mass.) had no trouble defeating the Austin Boat Club/Union Boat Club duo of Lisa Culbertson (Dallas, Texas) and Claudia Wagner (Austin, Texas). Brezler and Tripician crossed the finish line with a time of 7:15.25, more than 14 seconds ahead of Culbertson and Wagner. The two repechage winners join the two heat winners, USRowing Training Center’s Jen Goldsack (Henley-on-Thames, United Kingdom) and Renee Hykel (Haverford, Pa.) and Vesper’s Julie Nichols (Livermore, Calif.) and Libby Peters (Utica, N.Y.), in tomorrow’s first final.

Finals at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Rowing are held in a best two-out-of-three format. The first set of finals will be held on Thursday at 8:00 a.m. The second set of finals will take place on Friday starting at 8:00 a.m., with third finals taking place on Saturday, if necessary. The start time for Saturday’s racing is to be announced. For a complete schedule and results, please visit http://www.usrowing.org/.

These trials are referred to as the non-qualified small boat trials because the United States failed to qualify the boats for the 2008 Olympic Games at last year’s world championships. The winners of the trials will have to compete at the 2008 Olympic Qualification Regatta June 15-18 in Poznan, Poland, in order to qualify to race in Beijing. Qualification spots at the regatta are available to the top three finishers in the men’s single sculls, top two finishers in the lightweight men’s double sculls and top two finishers in the lightweight women’s double sculls.
