Pan American Games Trials Underway at Mercer Lake

The 2007 Pan American Games Trials for Rowing continued with heats and select repechages, or second-chance races, on Monday at the Finn M.W. Caspersen Rowing Center on Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J.
Two-time Olympian Steve Tucker from Union Boat Club clocked the fastest time of the morning heats in the men’s single sculls. Racing in the fourth of four heats, Tucker, who raced in the lightweight double sculls at the past two Olympics, crossed the finish line with a time of 7:04.12 to advance directly to Tuesday’s semifinals. New York Athletic Club’s James Dietz finished second in a 7:08.03. Princeton Training Center’s Warren Anderson won the first heat by more than eight seconds, finishing with a time of 7:09.30. Vesper Boat Club’s Jonathan Burns won the second heat by three seconds, clocking a 7:08.50. Potomac Boat Club’s Jamie Schroeder, a 2004 Olympian in the men’s four and the U.S. representative in the single at the 2006 World Championships, won the third heat by nearly five seconds in a time of 7:10.10. With the winner of each heat advancing to the semifinals, the remaining scullers raced in Monday afternoon’s repechages for the right to move on to the semifinals. In the repechages, Ben Churchill, Paul Antonik, Josh Brown, and Dietz advanced.
In the women’s single sculls, Princeton Training Center’s Julia Nichols finished with the fastest time of the heats. Racing in the first of two heats, Nichols, a four-time lightweight national team member, crossed the finish line with a time of 7:52.64. Pocock Rowing Center’s Nicole Sylvester finished second in an 8:00.89. Potomac Boat Club’s Reilly Dampeer won the second heat in a time of 7:57.94, while Whitemarsh Boat Club’s Melissa Rice finished second in an 8:02.68. The two heat winners advanced directly to Wednesday’s final, while the remaining scullers will race in a repechage on Tuesday.
Princeton Training Center’s Francis Cuddy and Deaglan McEachern recorded the fastest time of the heats in the men’s double sculls. The duo clocked a 6:31.84 to finish nearly two seconds ahead of California Rowing Club’s Elliot Hovey and Jon Greer. In the second heat, Riverside Boat Club’s Brett Wilkinson and Kent Smack, who were members of the 2004 Olympic quadruple sculls crew, won with a time of 6:39.94, finishing almost 14 seconds ahead of Undine Barge Club’s Jordan Smith and Ferdinand Bergen. The two heat winners advanced directly to the finals, while the remaining crews will race in Tuesday’s repechages.
Racing in the second of two heats, Potomac Boat Club’s Mae Joyce Gay and Liz Mygatt recorded the fastest time of the heats in the women’s double sculls. The PBC duo finished with a time of 7:14.97, more than eight seconds ahead of the second-place crew from Riverside Boat Club. Potomac’s Margaret Matia and Sarah Trowbridge won the first heat with a time of 7:15.71. Vesper Boat Club’s Ann Holmes and Beth Greene finished second, more than five seconds behind. The two heat winners advanced directly to the final, while the remaining boats moved on to Tuesday’s repechages.
Malta Boat Club’s Andrew Liverman and Richard Montgomery recorded the fastest time in the heats of the lightweight men’s double sculls. Racing in the first of two heats, the duo stroked a 6:28.66 to finish more than eight seconds ahead of Fairmount Rowing Association’s Matthew Henwood and Andrew Grzybowski. Malta Boat Club’s Brandon O’Brien and Nathaniel O’Connor won the second heat, edging California Rowing Club’s Gavin Frase and Robert Zechmann by 0.12 seconds. Malta finished with a time of 6:30.04 to California’s 6:30.16. The two heat winners advanced directly to the final, while the remaining boats moved on to Tuesday’s repechages.
In the men’s pair, Caspersen Training Center’s Dan Beery and Patrick O’Dunne clocked a 6:38.01 to record the fastest time of the heats. Racing in the second of two heats, the duo finished more than 14 seconds ahead of Penn AC’s Stephen Kasprzyk and Patrick Godfrey. In the first heat, Penn AC’s Micah Boyd and Ted Farwell crossed the finish line with a time of 6:42.61, finishing 10 seconds ahead of Caspersen Training Center’s David Banks and Paul Daniels.
In total, 10 events are being contested at the trials including the men’s single sculls, women’s single sculls, men’s double sculls, women’s double sculls, lightweight men’s double sculls, lightweight women’s double sculls, men’s pair, women’s pair, men’s four and lightweight men’s four, with the winners earning spots on the team that will represent the United States at the 2007 Pan American Games July 14-19 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, pending United States Olympic Committee approval. In addition, the men’s quadruple sculls, women’s quadruple sculls and men’s eight will be selected from the above events. For both the men’s and women’s quadruple sculls, the winners of the single and double will join the second-place finisher from the single to make up the crew. For the men’s eight, the winners of the pair and four will join the second-place finisher from the pair to make up the crew.
Racing continues on Tuesday with the remaining repechages and semifinals. Finals are contested in a best two-out-of-three format, with the first finals taking place on Wednesday and the second finals taking place on Thursday. In events in which different crews win the first and second final, a third final will be held on Friday. Racing begins at 7 a.m. each day.
