By Cecil Bleiker // U.S. Olympic Committee // April 20, 2007
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The United States Olympic Committee announced today that it will host the 2007 USA Pentathlon Junior National Championships in conjunction with the Senior Nationals that are scheduled for June 9-10 in Colorado Springs, Colo. The event will be staged at the U.S. Olympic Complex and the Norris-Penrose Events Center.
“After considering the dates and facility requirements for hosting the 2007 USA Pentathlon Junior National Championships, it made the most sense to host the event in conjunction with the Senior Nationals that were already scheduled for June 9-10 in Colorado Springs,” said Scott Novack, the United States Olympic Committee’s Manager of High Performance for Modern Pentathlon. “The U.S. Olympic Training Center and Norris-Penrose Events Center have proved exemplary facilities for hosting modern pentathlon events and have extensive experience with these two particular events, having hosted them the last several years. June 9-10 prove to be the optimum dates for holding the two events, as it fits perfectly within the existing international competition schedule that includes the Pan American Games in July and the Senior World Championships in August.”
The male and female winner of the 2007 USA Pentathlon Senior National Championships will automatically earn a spot on the USA Pentathlon Team that will compete at the 2007 World Modern Pentathlon Championships in Berlin, Germany, August 15-22. The 2007 USA Pentathlon Senior National Championships is also designated as a domestic event in the International Pentathlon Point System (IPPS) giving athletes the opportunity to earn valuable IPPS that will count toward an athlete’s international ranking which factors into eventual U.S. Olympic Team selection for 2008.
For the 2007 USA Pentathlon Junior National Championships, the top three female and male winners may earn the opportunity to represent the United States at the 2007 Junior Modern Pentathlon World Championships, September 25-30 in Caldas da Rainha, Portugal.
The complete competition packages for both the Senior and Junior National Championships, including registration forms and event schedule, are being finalized and will be available soon on the USOC/USA Pentathlon website at www.usolympicteam.com/152.htm. The dates and location for the 2007 USA Pentathlon Youth National Championships are also being finalized and will be announced in the very near future.
