Beijing 2008
Haworth's fourth at weightlifting Worlds

Two-time U.S. Olympian (2000 and 2004) and 2000 Olympic bronze medalist, Cheryl Haworth (Savannah, Ga./Colorado Springs, Colo.) reaffirmed that she is one of the best women's weightlifters in the world with her fourth-place finish today in the women's 75+kg weight class at the 2006 World Weightlifting Championships in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.  Haworth posted a total of 274kg with a snatch of 121kg (fourth place) and a clean and jerk of 157kg (fourth place) to finish fourth overall behind Korea's Mi-Ran Jang (314kg), China's Shuangshuang Mu (314kg) and the Ukraine's Olha Korobka (284kg). Haworth secured fourth place easily with the next three women lifting 257kg each.

Haworth's performance appears to bode well as she continues preparation for the 2008 Olympic Games. In June 2006, Haworth moved to Colorado Springs to become a resident athlete at the U.S. Olympic Training Center. The move also meant a new coach for Haworth, who left her coach in Savannah, Michael Cohen, to now hone her skills under Bob Morris, the head coach of the women's weightlifting program at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.

Haworth's fellow number one ranked U.S. weightlifter Casey Burgener (Bonsall, Calif./Colorado Springs, Colo.) also performed well today coming in with the highest finish for the U.S. men's team. Burgener placed 10th overall in the men's 105+kg weight class posting a total of 390kg. Burgener recorded a snatch of 175kg (ninth place) and a clean and jerk of 215kg (12th place).

Donald Shankle (Wichita Falls, Texas/Colorado Springs, Colo.) rounded out today's competition for the U.S. with a final placing of 18th place in the men's 105kg weight class. Shankle lifted a total of 360kg with a snatch of 165kg (18th place) and a clean and jerk of 195kg (20th place).

Today was the final day of competition at the 2006 World Weightlifting Championships. A recap of the U.S. Team's performance is listed below. For complete results please visit www.iwf.net, the official website of the International Weightlifting Federation or www.usaweightlifting.org , the official website of USA Weightlifting.

Melanie Roach (Bonney Lake, Wash.) got the U.S. Team started on Oct. 2 with her 12th place finish in the women's 53kg weight class.

With their performance at the 2006 World Weightlifting Championships, the USA Weightlifting Team has put themselves in a good position in regards to team qualification for the 2008 Olympic Games.  The 2006 World Weightlifting Championships count a little less than half of the Olympic qualification criteria for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China.  The number of athletes that the United States will qualify to enter into the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China will be determined by team placement at both the 2006 and 2007 World Weightlifting Championships.
