Pan Am - Three U.S. Athletes Advance To Finals On Opening Day Of Water Skiing Event
By Scott Atkinson // USA Water Ski // July 21, 2007
RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil – U.S. Water Ski Team members Regina Jaquess (Suwanee, Ga.), Mandy Nightingale (Sapulpa, Okla.) and Austin Hair (Tega Cay, S.C.) each advanced to the finals in respective events on Saturday as preliminary-round action in water skiing got under way at the 2007 Pan American Games at Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas.
Jaquess scored 3 buoys at 38 feet off to earn the top seed for the finals of women's slalom, while Nightingale scored 3 buoys at 35 feet off to earn the No. 2 seed. The top-eight placements in men’s and women’s slalom advanced to Monday’s finals. Jaquess' score was just one buoy shy of tying the Pan American Games' record of 4 buoys at 38 off set by Canada's Susi Graham-McCormick in 1999.
“I’m happy with how it all turned out,” said Jaquess, who earned a silver medal in women’s slalom at the 2003 Pan American Games. “At least for the finals I’ll know what I need to do when I come off the dock as the top seed.”
Hair, nursing a badly sprained ankle suffered at a tournament three weeks ago, tallied 38.77 points in finishing sixth in the men's wakeboarding preliminary round. He earned the final spot for Monday's finals. “I’m going to have to step it up a lot in the finals,” said Hair, who has been wearing a removable cast. “With only one spot getting cut today, I just wanted to get out there and throw a few tricks and see how the foot would do. It felt really good, so I’m hoping it won’t feel any different for the finals.”
In men’s slalom action, U.S. Water Ski Team member Jonathan Travers (Groveland, Fla.) managed to score just 2-1/2 buoys at 32 feet off in his Pan American Games debut and failed to advance to the finals. “I think I just released a little bit early coming into 3 ball and I dropped my shoulder and skipped out,” Travers said. “I should have held on with two hands a little longer to get wider.”
Sunday’s action includes men’s and women’s jumping and tricks. Jaquess and Nightingale will compete in women’s jumping; Travers will compete in men’s jumping; and Cory Pickos (Santa Rosa Beach, Fla.) will compete in men’s tricks.
