Three U.S. wakeboarders shine at worlds

Three U.S. athletes earned individual medals at the fourth Cable Wakeboard World Championships, July 26-30, in Feldkirchen, Austria. More than 150 riders from 19 countries participated in the four-day event. Eight U.S. athletes participated as members of the U.S. Cable Wakeboard Team, which earned the bronze medal for the second consecutive year. Germany won the gold medal for the second consecutive year and Great Britain earned the silver medal.

"The U.S. Cable Wakeboard Team displayed a tremendous effort against other world teams competing at the Cable Wakeboard World Championships," said Andy Jugan, USA Water Ski's executive director. "With three U.S. athletes earning individual medals at the event, the U.S. team proved once again that it has some of the top cable wakeboard riders in the world."

U.S. Cable Wakeboard Team members Josh Bank (Boca Raton, Fla.), Heather Johnson (Orlando, Fla.) and Rob Mapp (Pompano Beach, Fla.) all earned silver medals in respective events. Mapp earned the silver medal in Open Men, scoring 61.15 points; Bank earned the silver medal in Boys, tallying 48.64 points; and Johnson earned the silver medal in Junior Women, scoring 48.09 points.

Other members of the U.S. Cable Wakeboard Team were: Melanie Chojnacki (Pompano Beach, Fla.); Lu Le (Orlando, Fla.); Diego Shaw (Boca Raton, Fla.); Donald Shelbrick (Boca Raton, Fla.); and Marc Shuster (Delray Beach, Fla.). Le placed fifth in Masters Men; Shaw placed 10th in Junior Men; and Shelbrick finished 12th in Open Men. Chojnacki and Shuster did not advance to the finals in their respective events.

U.S. independent rider Kayla Chojnacki (Pompano Beach, Fla.) advanced to the finals in Junior Women, and placed fifth.
