USA Womens Senior National Team Topples Canada 10-7 On Day One Of 9th Holiday Cup
By Greg Mescall // United States Water Polo // December 6, 2007
The United States held off a feisty Canada squad 10-7 in the nightcap of the first day of action at the 9th Holiday Cup. USA and Canada played to a draw in the first quarter ending tied at 1-1. In the second USA started to flex their offensive muscles taking advantage of exclusions as Natalie Golda, Jessica Steffens, and Erika Figge would all find the net on man-ups to help build a 5-3 lead at halftime. The third quarter saw Canada rally to within a goal at 8-7 with time winding down in the third quarter. That however would be the last of their offense as USA tacked on two fourth quarter scores courtesy of Golda and Patty Cardenas. Golda and Lauren Wenger led the offense with two goals apiece. Betsey Armstrong was solid in net turning away nine shots. USA takes on the Netherlands and Russia tomorrow.
Flash Quotes:
"We didn't convert on man up situations and when you don't convert on special teams you will have problems. We drew ejections and just didn't capitalize and the US capatlized on theirs." Patrick Oaten, Head Coach, Canada
"I liked our five on six defense it was good, they ended up 3/10 (man up), tonight it had to be good. Conversely our defense was lousy, we never got into any type of rhythm defensively." Guy Baker, Head Coach - USA
