Women's Senior Team Topples Canada
By Greg Mescall // USA Water Polo // November 30, 2007
In their first official competition since the 2007 Pan American Games this past summer the USA Women's Senior National Team picked up where they left off with a defeat of Canada by a count of 8-6 to open their play at the Four Nations Cup in Montreal. It was the Canadians who Team USA downed to claim Gold in Brazil back in July and once again America came through with the win.
After a slow offensive start in the first half that saw Canada outshoot the USA 14-7, Team USA came alive in the third quarter busting open what had been a 2-2 tie and taking a 7-3 lead headed to the fourth. In the fourth quarter Canada rallied to get the score to within two goals at 7-5 but a late score by USA built back up a three goal cushion at 8-5 and they would go on for the 8-6 victory.
Team captain Brenda Villa led the offense with three goals while Natalie Golda contributed a pair of her own. Betsey Armstrong went the whole way in net denying 12 shots. Next up on the docket will be a match with Russia on Thursday afternoon at 6:30 pm EST/3:30 pm PST. In other action Australia defeated the Russians 11-9
