Azevedo, Armstrong and Wenger received inaugural FINA awards for outstanding performances at 2007 World Championships

Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Center, April 1, 2007 - After the men's gold medal round today, FINA representatives presented Tony Azevedo with the men's tournament top scorer award. Scoring 19 goals in seven matches, Azevedo received this extraordinary honor despite the fact his team failed to advance to the medal rounds, finishing ninth out of sixteen teams. With his award today, Azevedo joins fellow USA National Team athletes, Betsey Armstrong and Lauren Wenger who were presented with their official FINA awards just minutes after claiming the 2007 World Championship title last night.

Betsey Armstrong not only backstopped Team USA to their second World Championship title with her rock solid performance behind the goal, but she was also named the women's tournament outstanding goalkeeper by the FINA Federation. Armstrong recorded 12 blocks in both team USA’s 10-9 semifinal win over Hungary and in the one-goal championship victory over Australia.

Lauren Wenger had a phenomenal breakout performance at this year's World Championship. Wenger helped secure her team's place in the record books by scored the winning goal for the U.S. in the final minutes of the gold medal game. As a result of her valuable performance throughout the tournament, Wenger was awarded the women's MVP award by the FINA Federation.
